March 10: National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers
March 10 is the National Day of Appreciation for Abortion Providers, observed every year on the anniversary of the day in 1993 when David Gunn, MD, was murdered by an anti-choice extremist. Every year, we honor the courageous medical practitioners who provide this much-needed service and fight the stigma surrounding this safe, legal medical care. You can read about our events from years past below.
Part of what Physicians does as an organization is share and celebrate doctors’ stories. Over a decade ago, we began compiling personal accounts from doctors across the country that underscore the importance of fighting to preserve reproductive rights, published in a brochure called Why I Provide. This small brochure--and its subsequent editions--has been hailed by the medical community and in the larger pro-choice and social justice communities as well.
Due in part to the popularity of the original Why I Provide, Physicians invites members of the Leadership Training Academy class to share their stories of why they provide and why they support their colleagues who provide. Here are the stories from our Class of 2014. Our Class of 2013 stories are available here.
