Oklahoma Passes Total Abortion Ban

Today, Oklahoma passed a total abortion ban, now heading to the Governor’s desk for signing, endangering the lives of all pregnant people in Oklahoma.

Board Member at Physicians for Reproductive Health Dr. Ghazaleh Moayedi who is an ob/gyn in Texas and Oklahoma, responds:

“I am proud to care for the people of Oklahoma and I know the communities I serve have very real health care needs they need their elected officials to address. Rather than addressing the current health care needs of Oklahomans, today the Oklahoma legislature passed a total ban on abortion that they brought back from the 2021 legislative session, called SB621. In addition to this clearly unconstitutional and reckless law, Oklahoma’s legislature is still attempting to pass a copycat ban to Texas’s SB8.

It has never been more obvious that politicians are using tricks and games to pass these harmful laws.

“It has never been more obvious that politicians are using tricks and games to pass these harmful laws. Oklahoma legislators are trying to ban abortion from all sides and merely seeing which of these dangerous, shameful bills they can get their Governor to sign. As an ob/gyn and abortion provider who takes care of patients from Texas traveling to Oklahoma, I am alarmed at what this also means for all patients across our region and the impact will reverberate across the country.

“Abortion is life-saving health care that people should be able to access in their communities. Any attempt to ban abortion is rooted in controlling and coercing communities who have been historically denied equitable rights, care, and resources in our country: Black people, Brown people, Indigenous people, people of color, and all folx struggling to make ends meet.”
