Story No. 378: Dr. Shandhini from Hawaii

Alex was 19 years old, working two jobs and living at home with her mother, her three siblings, and her grandparents. She was trying to save enough money to start taking classes at a community college to work toward becoming a nurse. Alex has irregular periods, and because of her busy work schedule she has never been able to make time for a doctor’s appointment to talk about her periods or about starting birth control. She didn’t know she was pregnant until she was almost at 21 weeks. She was able to have her abortion, have an IUD placed immediately afterwards, and enroll in her first semester of classes. With a 20-week abortion ban, Alex’s career goals would be out of reach.
