Story No. 395: Hannah from New York

I am a 25 years old and found out I was pregnant a week after Donald Trump was inaugurated. I live in New York City, where rent, transportation, basic utilities, and student loan bills gobble up my modest income working at a non-profit organization.

Though I had a supportive partner, I knew I was not mentally or financially prepared to become a parent. During the days leading up to my appointment to take the abortion pill, I avoided social media and the internet in general, where so many people were voicing their opinions (for and against) abortion.

My partner and I were extremely nervous about new legislation being passed before my appointment. It added a whole new set of anxieties surrounding my decision. I know I made the right choice and cannot begin to imagine my life had I not had access to a safe and affordable abortion. I am forever grateful for the individuals that helped me through this traumatic time and for the nurse practitioners who made me feel safe and comfortable.

It is critical that women maintain the right to decide what is right for their own bodies, lives, and futures. I will fight to see that this (basic!!) right is not taken away from women. I am not ashamed of my story. I found so much comfort hearing from others that have made the same decision. In the future, I plan to share it with others who find themselves in a similar situation as me or with those with opposing views.
