Story No. 547: Meaghan from Massachusetts

Had I not had access to an abortion provider, I would have had a child that stood a greater chance of dying than living. I carry a rare metabolic disorder, and at 33 I had a son. Five days later, he nearly died.

When I was 16 and had my first abortion, the treatments that would save my son weren’t yet discovered.

In my early twenties when I had my second abortion, the treatments weren’t yet finely homed, and the medication that stabilized him was still in its early stages of testing.

I only became aware that I carried this disorder, Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency, when I became symptomatic after labor and delivery. I can’t imagine having had a child pass away and being able to handle it when I was at such a young age.
