Gender-Inclusive Language Quick Start Guide
Each year, March 31 is Trans Day of Visibility, a time dedicated to honoring the brilliance, beauty, and resilience of our queer and transgender community.
One way we can move in allyship with the queer and trans community is by being intentional with our language, especially as we discuss access to sexual and reproductive health care.
Language is specific—the words we use have meaning and impact. When we say things like “women’s health” when describing sexual and reproductive health care, we unintentionally erase the lived experiences and needs of people who may access this care but may not identify as women. When our default is gendered language, we risk isolating some of the most vulnerable members of our communities. At Physicians for Reproductive Health, we are deeply committed to changing that. This is why we are proud to share our Gender-Inclusive Language Quick Start Guide.
This tool is intended for health care providers, policymakers, journalists, and advocates interested in adopting a stronger praxis for gender-inclusive language.
We would like to thank PRH Fellow Dr. Emile Redwood for his support with this tool. Dr. Redwood is a uro-gynecologist and provider of gender-affirming care based in Chicago.
We hope that the Gender-Inclusive Language Quick Start Guide can be a tool for you and your colleagues. We have included some additional resources about gender-inclusive language, Trans Day of Visibility, and health care standards below.
