Abortion care is one of the only areas of medicine where federal and state governments put politics and ideology before the patient-provider relationship, with the intent to criminalize and punish people who need and provide care. As physicians, we use our medical expertise and experience caring for our patients to advocate for the right to access abortion care in our communities without barrier, delay, or stigma.
Physicians for Reproductive Health is uniquely positioned to bring evidence and clarity to the most politicized area of medicine; but we know it shouldn’t be this way. Everyone should be able to have access to the care they need, when they need it, without politicians, restrictions, or barriers getting in the way. We believe that speaking about abortion helps remove the stigma that anti-abortion lawmakers and anti-abortion extremists have attached to it. Through our practice we have seen that abortion access strengthens our families and communities.
We are proud to provide comprehensive reproductive health care to patients and to help ensure that everyone has the choice to determine their futures, including if, when, and how to become a parent.

What we’re doing about it
Anti-abortion policymakers use deceitful tactics to ban particular methods of abortion care, prohibit abortions sought for a particular reason, or after a certain point in pregnancy. These bans police the relationship between patients and providers, and prevent medical professionals from providing their patients with the timely care they need for their unique circumstances. Abortion bans serve no medical purpose, and courts have deemed many of them unconstitutional. We advocate against abortion bans through public awareness campaigns, legislator education, lobby days, and speaking out in the media about the harms they create for patients.
One of the most damaging tactics used by anti-abortion extremists is sharing misinformation and disinformation about how abortion works, about pregnancy development, and about the safety of abortion care. As physicians, we have the medical evidence on our side: medication abortion care in clinics, via telehealth, and in a self-managed context and procedural abortions in outpatient and inpatient settings are all exceptionally safe. We share the latest research and evidence with policymakers and the media to ensure that the public is getting more accurate information about abortion from the people who study and provide this care.
While legal restrictions are one barrier to accessing abortion, another is affordability. It is critical that people can afford their abortion care. We know that when people cannot secure funding for their care, their care is further delayed making it more costly, and sometimes forcing people to travel longer distances to get the care they need. We are committed to advocating for a world where no matter what source of insurance people rely on, whether funded by the government, their employer, or are self-pay, that their care is financially accessible.
“Every patient deserves abortion access without political crossfire. They have the right to make informed health care decisions based on facts, not fear.”
