Emile Redwood (BA, MD) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2026 and specializes in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. They shared the following reflections on their work, advocacy, and what brings them joy.

What are your clinical or research interests?

I’m interested in gender affirming medicine and surgery, transgender urinary and pelvic health issues, menopause medicine and queer family building. I’m interested in the use of simulation for both standardized patient and hands on skills building in these arenas. There’s a lot of work to do in these areas to add to data informing best practices and continue to care for patients throughout their lifespans.

What current policy issue motivates you to be an advocate?

Restrictions on gender affirming care, especially for youth, abortions restrictions and bans.

What local justice-centered organization do you wish we knew about?

Brave Space Alliance in Chicago, which is Black trans-led LGBTQ+ center located in the south side and provides services, programs centering trans and LGBQ+ folks.

What is bringing you joy these days?

Small patient interactions that feel like wins, continuing to gain clinical skills in my fellowship, new connections in the advocacy community, my 4 years old sibling cats Shark and Moby, my family, grilling on the back porch, connecting with nature and being in any body of water- bath, pool, lake or ocean.

Our Meet Our Advocates series showcases the talents and passion of one of our doctors and finds out, in their own words, what inspires them to be physician advocates. Learn more about the Leadership Training Academy.
