Heather Sweeney (MD) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2027 and specializes in OB/GYN and Complex Family Planning. Reflections on work, advocacy, and sources of joy are shared below.

What are your clinical or research interests?

Abortion, Contraception, and Obstetric Care Access, Improving Pregnancy Loss Care, Health Equity and Anti-Racism, Gender-Affirming Care, Reproductive Healthcare for Women Athletes.

What current policy issue motivates you to be an advocate?

Barriers to pregnancy and abortion care in ban states, as well as in non-ban states due to insurance or religious-affiliated hospitals; criminalization of abortion and pregnancy loss.

What local justice-centered organization do you wish we knew about?

Maternal and Child Health Access, Black Infants & Families Los Angeles.

What is bringing you joy these days?

My community in LA, my partner, and our puppy, Tony!
