Jessica Mitter
Jessica (DO, MSc) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2026 and specializes in Family Medicine. She shared the following reflections on her work, advocacy, and what brings her joy.
What are your clinical or research interests?
I’m passionate about incorporating LGBTQ+ inclusive sexual and reproductive health, gender-affirming care, and HIV care into primary care. I also love public health and medical education, particularly incorporating structural competency into curriculum.
What current policy issue motivates you to be an advocate?
I started my journey in medicine with a background in public health and a love of global health, HIV care, and reproductive health. To now see USAID and PEPFAR cuts threatening global HIV care and Medicaid cuts threatening Planned Parenthood and care for the communities I serve, it makes it even more essential now more than ever to advocate for these essential programs and services.
What local justice-centered organization do you wish we knew about?
Housing Works! They are an organization that fights for funding and legislation to ensure that all people living with HIV/AIDS have access to quality housing, healthcare, HIV prevention information and other life-sustaining services, as well as legal protections from stigma and discrimination. They also have neat thrift stores and a bookstore to help fund their cause, so definitely recommend checking out their stores if you are in the city!
What is bringing you joy these days?
Enjoying this stage of my life in NYC by exploring neighborhoods with my mini-goldendoodle Ladoo and going to all the concerts!
Our Meet Our Advocates series showcases the talents and passion of one of our doctors and finds out, in their own words, what inspires them to be physician advocates. Learn more about the Leadership Training Academy.
