At 20 weeks pregnant, Monica* started bleeding. She bled through her pants, her sheets, and the two towels she wrapped around her waist as she drove to the hospital. When she got to the hospital, she continued to bleed and was diagnosed with placenta previa — a condition where the placenta is attached too low in the uterus causing life-threatening bleeding and preterm labor. Every time she had a contraction, a gush of blood soaked the hospital bed.
