Physicians condemns Texas judge’s ACA ruling

On Friday, a Texas U.S. District Court judge ruled that the Affordable Care Act was unconstitutional, threatening the health and well-being of our nation.

Family medicine physician and Board Member of Physicians for Reproductive Health Dr. Bhavik Kumar issued the following statement:

“As someone who takes care of families every day in Texas, this shameful ruling could devastate a literal lifeline for many of my patients.

“Without this coverage, comprehensive reproductive health care will be out of reach for millions of women, especially women with low incomes.”

“Twenty million people across this country are enrolled in the Affordable Care Act. It has been groundbreaking for women’s health—they no longer have to pay more money for their coverage because of their gender. Patients with preexisting conditions have been able to access the health care they deserve and need. Young adults are ensured access to care through their parent’s health insurance until they are 26. Without this coverage, comprehensive reproductive health care will be out of reach for millions of women, especially women with low incomes.

“Patients in my home state of Texas and across the country need more access to health care, not less. They need their policymakers to address maternal mortality rates, improve access to preventive services, close the gap in coverage, and break down barriers to safe abortion care. This ruling must be reversed—the health of our nation depends on it.”
