HHS Releases Anti-Trans “Report”

OUR STATEMENT

Today, the Department of Health and Human Services released a new “report” touted by known anti-trans clinicians and researchers known for historically supporting an anti-trans agenda.

Dr. Jamila Perritt, President & CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health and ob/gyn in Washington DC responds: 

“Let me be very clear: the information presented in today’s report is not grounded in scientific or medical evidence. This pseudoscience is, instead, grounded in hateful ideological language. Simply suggesting this research is ‘peer reviewed’ does not mean it is supported by research or that the evidence presented is credible. In reality, a multitude of research supported by mainstream medical organizations such as the American Academy for Pediatrics, Endocrine Society, Pediatric Endocrine Society, and the World Professional Association for Transgender Youth shows that gender-affirming care is essential medical care that supports the health and wellbeing of trans people across the country. 

“The Trump Administration is clearly touting mis- and disinformation and calling it ‘evidence’ to advance false and unsupported claims about gender-affirming care. Their agenda is clear and dangerous: the Administration will rely on the so-called findings in this ‘report’ to issue orders that restrict gender-affirming care.  

“It is critical that we pay close attention to who the Department of Health and Human Services has tapped to ‘review’ this ‘report’ and who has declined to participate. This ‘report’ was reviewed by people who are well known for touting harmful, transphobic rhetoric within and outside of their own communities. The individuals are well known transphobic actors. None of them provide gender-affirming care and many of them have made public testimonies in support of transphobic legislation. Unsurprisingly, the Administration stacked its review board with people who would agree with these dangerous claims.  

“Physicians for Reproductive Health proudly supports and will continue to support the physicians in our community who provide gender-affirming care every single day. The providers in our network follow the guidance of the American Medical Association and American Academy of Pediatrics, among other relevant medical societies and organizations. These leaders in gender affirming care make it clear time and time again that gender-affirming care is safe and lifesaving for transgender people of all ages. The Trump Administration’s attack on established research protocols and practices is an effort to undermine medical evidence, scientific research, and the expertise of providers who listen to the needs of their patients every single day.  

“It is our duty to follow the medical and scientific evidence when advocating for and providing health care, not the ideological and political views of those not qualified to care for those who need it.”
