In response to the news of Justice Kennedy announcing his retirement from the Supreme Court, Board Chair of Physicians for Reproductive Health Dr. Willie Parker issued the following statement:
“The news of Justice Kennedy retiring from the Supreme Court is concerning for anyone who cares about fundamental rights.
“President Trump made it clear that he will only appoint justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade. If the President succeeds, Justice Kennedy’s retirement means the balance of the court will be stacked against the constitutional right to abortion.
It is outrageous that in 2018, patients have to worry about their ability to access a legal medical procedure.

We know that restrictions on abortion harm those who already have limited access to health care, including people of color, low-income families, and young people.
“From the Supreme Court decisions announced this week, it’s also evident that the next justice’s nomination is not only critical for abortion access but also threatens other fundamental rights we hold dear, like access to health care, the right to vote, and religious freedom.
“It’s now more important than ever for medical professionals to speak out for patients and families across the country.”
