Senate Passes Gender-Affirming Care Ban for Servicemembers

Senate passes National Defense Authorization Act with bans on coverage for gender-affirming care for servicemembers.

OUR STATEMENT

Today the United States Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act including bans on funding for gender-affirming care.

Dr. Meera Shah, family medicine physician from New York and Board Member with Physicians for Reproductive Health responds:

“As someone who provides health care for people over the course of their lifespan, I know how vital it is for everyone to be able to access the supportive, affirming health care that they need, including service members and their families. Everyone deserves access to the essential health care they need and the freedom to live authentically.

“Bans on coverage for gender-affirming care don’t stop people from needing gender-affirming care; it only makes people spend more money, travel further distances, and overcome more medically unnecessary hurdles to be safe and well.”
