Trump Administration to Stop Covering Gender Affirming Care for Federal Workers
OUR STATEMENT
On Friday August 15, 2025, the Trump Administration announced it will no longer cover gender affirming care for federal employees and their families starting in 2026.
PRH President & CEO and ob/gyn in Washington DC, Dr. Jamila Perritt responds:
“This move by the Trump Administration to no longer cover gender affirming care for federal workers and their family members is a discriminatory action violating the constitutional rights of federal workers. This is a devastating and unconstitutional attempt to put transgender federal workers and their family members in medically dangerous situations by denying them the lifesaving care they need. It is dangerous and it is cruel.
“The health care that you or I can obtain should not be determined by the President that is in office. Health care is a basic human right, no matter someone’s gender identity. This move continues a dangerous pattern by this Administration of promoting and perpetuating gender-based discrimination.
“Government workers dedicate their professional lives to supporting our country. This Administration has caste them aside, undermined their work and now, instead of having access to the support and resources they need to stay well, they are being used as pawns to further this discriminatory agenda. This is morally reprehensible, and as a physician, I know this is going to put the health and wellbeing of countless people and families in untenable situations.
“As providers of care in our communities, we will continue to fight for the health and well-being of our patients. We support our partners exploring all options to hold the Administration accountable and ensure that everyone is able to get the basic health care they need.”
