Trump Admin Releases Tylenol Misinformation
OUR STATEMENT
Today, the Trump Administration announced disinformation about Tylenol use in pregnancy.
Dr. Mariana Montes, both a former pediatrician and now obstetric anesthesiologist in Illinois and Fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health responds:
“As someone with expertise in the care of children of all ages, who now spends every single day caring for pregnant people with special attention to pain management during pregnancy and childbirth, I am extremely alarmed at the Trump Administration’s misinformation and disinformation about Tylenol use in pregnancy, a predictable continuation of the pseudoscience claims RFJ Jr. has issued his entire political career. Let me be clear: as both a pediatrician and obstetrical anesthesiologist, I know from the evidence that Tylenol use during pregnancy and breastfeeding is extremely safe.
“Pregnant people need safe options to manage pain during pregnancy, and Tylenol is a well-studied, safe and effective option that should not be restricted. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have issued repeated clinical guidelines naming Tylenol as a safe and effective pain management and fever reduction medication to use during pregnancy, and ACOG will not be changing these guidelines in response to today’s fake news.
“The Trump Administration, and specifically RFK Jr., have been obsessed with finding any kind of correlation that might point to a lead in the cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). As a scientist, let me remind you that correlation does not equal causation. The fearmongering by RFK Jr. will only confuse pregnant patients and cause unnecessary fear. Furthermore, people with ASD live full, healthy lives and are worthy of support, not being othered, stigmatized, and ostracized by politicians. Perhaps the Trump Administration should instead focus on the real public health crises our nation is currently facing: restrictions on abortion care, attacks on gender affirming care, and a horrifying maternal and infant mortality crisis. Where is their obsession with finding solutions to those deadly problems?
“This is just another attack by RFK Jr. and the Trump administration against pregnant patients that will result in physical and emotional obstetric violence and further worsen pregnancy outcomes. As physicians, we instead guide our medical practice on science and evidence. The evidence is clear: Tylenol is safe.”
