Resource for Anyone Talking About Abortion

WELCOME

Abortion is a nuanced subject that brings together many aspects of our lives: health care, economics, insurance coverage, zip code, families, faith, immigration status, race, and gender. If you’re speaking with friends, family, or colleagues, posting on social media, or wanting to advocate for abortion access, you can use this resource as a starting place to help you talk about abortion in a medically accurate and compassionate way.

What are the big takeaways?

  • Abortion is a normal part of full spectrum reproductive health care and should be talked about as such.
  • Abortion is incredibly safe. People can also safely manage their abortions with medications on their own.
  • There’s no “good” or “bad” reason for abortions. All bans on abortion are dangerous and rooted in white supremacist coercion and control. This includes bans on later abortion care – later abortion care should always be available for communities, too.
  • Insurance coverage should always include coverage for abortion.
  • When we restrict access to abortion, other reproductive health care and reproductive health outcomes suffer as a result.
  • Don’t repeat anti-abortion extremists’ stigmatizing, inaccurate language about abortion.
  • Center those who have abortions and provide abortions. This includes Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, people in the LGBTQ community, young people, and disabled people.
