Today is the 23rd anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of mifepristone. Dr. Jamila Perritt, President & CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health and ob/gyn in Washington DC responds:
“For the last 23 years, health care providers like myself have been able to support patients in accessing exceptionally safe medication abortion care thanks to mifepristone. This medication, which is used in many medication abortions, is also used to treat pregnancy loss or miscarriages and other obstetrical care. In short, access to mifepristone is an essential medication.
“Unfortunately, just this year we’ve seen unprecedented attacks on this safe and effective medication. Those with an end goal of ensuring that abortion is completely banned in our country have relied on misinformation and disinformation to distort, confuse, and fabricate circumstances in court case after court case in an effort to paint a medically inaccurate picture of mifepristone.
These most recent attacks on mifepristone are just another example of how far anti-abortion extremists will go to mislead and misinform the public…
“Harassing and shaming people who need access to abortion care has always been a long relied upon, deceitful tactic used by anti-abortion extremists across the country. These most recent attacks on mifepristone are just another example of how far anti-abortion extremists will go to mislead and misinform the public about their health care options.
“Let me be clear: mifepristone has been shown time and time again to be an incredibly safe medication used in abortion and pregnancy care management. We will keep fighting back against medically inaccurate claims invented by politicians to scare patients. People should have access to all of their health care options, without barrier, in the communities where they live. Access to mifepristone is an essential part of equitable, person centered care.”
