Today, the lawsuit that could overturn most of the Affordable Care Act is being heard before a federal judge in Texas, just as Brett Kavanaugh is appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee to talk about his record on health care and other fundamental rights.
In response, Dr. Bhavik Kumar, Board Member of Physicians for Reproductive Health, issued the following statement:
“As someone who takes care of families every day in Texas, I know this lawsuit could devastate a literal lifeline for many of my patients.
“A million people in Texas are enrolled in the Affordable Care Act and my patients with preexisting chronic conditions have been able to access the health care they deserve and need. Without this coverage, most would be unable to afford health insurance and consequently unable to access medical care in a timely manner before they become too sick.
“As someone who takes care of families every day in Texas, I know this lawsuit could devastate a literal lifeline for many of my patients.”
“Right now, Brett Kavanaugh is answering questions about his ability to serve on the Supreme Court. This shameful ACA lawsuit highlights how important it is that the Senate rejects a Supreme Court nominee who will not protect the right to affordable, accessible health care. If Kavanaugh is confirmed and this case comes before the Supreme Court, he could be the vote that overturns care for millions of Americans.
“Communities in Texas need more access to health care, not less. They need their policymakers to address maternal mortality rates, improve access to preventive services, and break down barriers to safe abortion care. They need the Senate to reject Brett Kavanaugh. Their lives may depend on it.”
