WASHINGTON D.C.—Today, Physicians for Reproductive Health, All* Above All, and 930 health care providers, educators, and researchers sent a letter to President Biden urging the administration to take bold and immediate action to protect safe, effective medication abortion care.
Given the current reality surrounding abortion access in the United States and the large body of scientific and medical evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of mifepristone and misoprostol, we urge you to take every available action to ensure continued access to this critical care…
Mifepristone and misoprostol have been under near constant attack by politicians and judges, most recently in last week’s decision out of a District Court in Texas by an extreme anti-abortion judge that attempts to reverse the FDA’s approval of mifepristone and impose a national ban, which could go into effect in a matter of days.
Attacks on medication abortion care are not based in science or evidence; these attacks are purely political and are about coercing and controlling individuals’ bodily autonomy. And the harm falls hardest on people working to make ends meet, especially people of color.
The Biden Administration must act immediately to protect access to the critical care our communities need: As the letter states,
“As providers, researchers, and educators we can affirm the safety and efficacy of mifepristone and misoprostol and its importance to the people we care for. The decision about whether, when, and how to become a parent are some of the most important and consequential decisions to the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities. No one should have their health care options, including their method of abortion care, limited by politically motivated actors…
“Given the current reality surrounding abortion access in the United States and the large body of scientific and medical evidence supporting the safety and efficacy of mifepristone and misoprostol, we urge you to take every available action to ensure continued access to this critical care including by: sharing medically and scientifically accurate information about the options available for medication abortion care; sharing information about the safety and efficacy of mifepristone and misoprostol; centering communities most impacted by abortion bans and restrictions; and taking any other immediate action to protect access to medication abortion and support those providing and seeking abortion care as the legal landscape continues to shift.”
Read the full letter and review its signatories. The signers of the letter represent a diverse collective of supporters who know that abortion care is a normal and necessary part of the spectrum of reproductive health care. The signers urge President Biden and the administration to use this opportunity to take bold and immediate action in the face of these unprecedented attacks on safe, effective health care.
