This week, a Polk County district court ruled on the lawsuit filed by Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, the Emma Goldman Clinic, and Dr. Jill Meadows to block the six-week ban in Iowa. The court ruled in favor of women and families by agreeing that a six-week abortion ban is in direct disagreement with Iowans’ constitutional right to abortion care.
In response, Board Member of Physicians for Reproductive Health Dr. Jill Meadows issued the following statement:
“As a physician and an advocate for my patients, I am glad to see the court agree that six-week bans on abortion care are unconstitutional. As a state, we believe in ensuring every patient has access to the compassionate health care they need and deserve.
Iowa is my home and my community, and it appalls me to see politicians trying to endanger the health of patients I take care of every day.
“Iowa is my home and my community, and it appalls me to see politicians trying to endanger the health of patients I take care of every day. Our state already faces a shortage of facilities that provide abortion care, and this ruling proves that legislators have no place in the patient-provider relationship. My patients need laws that allow them to make the best decisions for their health and well-being. I need laws that allow me to use my medical expertise to provide life-saving and life-affirming health care. I applaud the court’s decision and hope that as a state we can continue to expand access to care, not eliminate it.”
