“H.R. 36 ignores the real-life circumstances that women face.”
New York, NY—Physicians for Reproductive Health (Physicians) joins other major medical groups in opposing H.R. 36, a dangerous ban on abortion after 20 weeks that will threaten the health and well-being of women facing complicated life circumstances.
Anne Davis, MD, MPH, consulting medical director for Physicians, commented, “Anti-choice politicians are relentless when it comes to placing barriers in the way of women seeking medical care. H.R. 36, a bill that bans abortion care after 20 weeks, ignores the real life personal stories of women and place their health and well-being in jeopardy. Making it illegal doesn’t change the fact that people need this care.
“Providers and their patients may determine abortion care after 20 weeks is the best medical option for a variety of reasons. This bill would take that decision out of the hands of patients and their trusted medical care providers and put it in the hands of politicians, while endangering women and jeopardizing safe, legal abortion care. My colleagues and I who provide abortion care know that every woman is unique, every pregnancy is different. I am called to take care of women every day who face these decisions. We must be able to provide women with the best care we can offer. I can tell you without hesitation that women know what they need more than any politician ever will.”
