Today, Governor Roy Cooper (D, NC) vetoed an attempt by the North Carolina legislature to shame people accessing safe and essential abortion care.
Fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health and family medicine physician in North Carolina Dr. Rathika Nimalendran replied with the following:
“As a physician providing the full spectrum of reproductive health care, including abortion care, to North Carolinians, I applaud Governor Cooper for affirming that politicians have no place in the patient-provider relationship. The patients I provide care for are the experts over their bodies, families, and futures; their health care options should not be dictated by politicians who do not share their lived experiences.

“Restrictions on abortion care like HB453 are not based in medical evidence, nor do they improve patient safety. As a medical expert who trained for many years to provide this care, I know that bans like this one only aim to further stigmatize people who need abortion care. This is an embarrassment; no one should be shamed for accessing safe, necessary health care.”
