Today, the House of Representatives reintroduced the Women’s Health Protection Act.
President and CEO of Physicians for Reproductive Health and ob/gyn in Washington, DC Dr. Jamila Perritt responds:
“Physicians for Reproductive Health applauds the reintroduction of the Women’s Health Protection Act by Representatives Chu (D-CA), Frankel (D-FL), Pressley (D-MA), and Escobar (D-TX). While we grieve the loss of federal protection for abortion access, we also know that Roe v. Wade never guaranteed the right to abortion for many communities. Even before the Supreme Court overturned Roe, people struggled to access care. Depending on where you live, how much money you make, who provides your health insurance, or your age, for many, accessing abortion in their own communities has been virtually impossible.
The bottom line is nobody should have their care decided for them by politicians or judges.
“Since the Dobbs decision, the crisis in access to abortion care has worsened. Numerous states have acted to ban abortion or make it impossible to obtain. The bottom line is nobody should have their care decided for them by politicians or judges. The Women’s Health Protection Act is a pivotal step toward ensuring abortion care is free of political interference and available to all who need this essential health care. We urge Congress to pass this critical legislation.”
