Today, the Senate is scheduled to vote on Sen. Ben Sasse’s (R-NE) wildly inflammatory bill that maligns abortion care later in pregnancy and vilifies abortion providers.
In response, Physicians for Reproductive Health Board Member Dr. Kristyn Brandi issued the following statement:
“It is frustrating that our Senators continue wasting their valuable time even considering medically irresponsible bills like Senator Sasse’s. This bill interferes with the patient-provider relationship and threatens physicians with criminal penalties. Meanwhile, debate surrounding this bill has created a dangerous platform for disseminating misleading and dishonest information about abortion and the health professionals providing abortion care.
This bill interferes with the patient-provider relationship and threatens physicians with criminal penalties.
“It is important to set the record straight. Abortion later in pregnancy has been grossly misrepresented by politicians and pundits. They keep using vague hypotheticals that have no basis in reality, are not what happens in real medical care, and, frankly, they are insulting to the one in four U.S. women that will need abortion care in their lifetimes. As a provider of the full spectrum of reproductive health care, including abortion care, I know that the best health care is care that is free from politicians trying to interfere with the trust in the patient-provider relationship.
“I am proud to provide abortion care to my patients. Every day they thank me for providing them with compassionate, nonjudgmental care. I urge Senators to stop politicizing health care and instead focus on providing real solutions to expand health care access for their constituents.”
