Story No. 125: Dr. Catherine from Ohio

Olivia had a first trimester abortion at a private clinic. She paid out of pocket since her insurance did not cover abortion. She had a complication from her abortion and came to see me, her regular gynecologist, for follow-up treatment.

Olivia had to pay $700 to get the care she needed, even though it was not an abortion.

Complications from abortion are very rare, but Olivia had some retained tissue which can cause abdominal pain and bleeding, putting her at risk for infection. Prompt treatment was needed to prevent further infection. Unfortunately, her insurance provider refused to cover her follow-up care because it was related to her abortion. They would only cover her treatment if her life were in danger. Olivia had to pay $700 to get the care she needed, even though it was not an abortion.
