Story No. 166: Dr. Anne from New York

New politics has brought new gratitude and new fear to my office. As I have watched the administration change, I go to work and take care of women who need the usual things: annual exams, cancer screening, birth control (a lot of IUDs these days) and treatment of miscarriages-among many things a gynecologist does. Something feels different for my abortion patients though. As usual, we discuss health history and plans for her care. But when the abortion is over, there’s a new kind of gratitude that is different from the relief women usually feel. Behind the gratitude, there’s an underlying sense of fear, even panic. Women think about what could happen soon…will abortion even be available? Will it be safe?
