Story No. 271: Nicole from New York

Last year I found out that the mutated BRCA2 gene (the gene mutation associated with breast cancer) runs in my family. As a woman in my mid-twenties, this news affected how I planned for my future screenings and fertility. I was able to work with my gynecologist and a genetic counselor to test for the gene. While I do not have the gene, two of my four sisters do and they engaged in education and preventive treatment. The information and treatment options were extremely important to women throughout my family. We now are able to prepare to test my younger nieces who may also have the gene. The reproductive health care we have received will surely impact my family for generations to come.
