The first time I went to a Planned Parenthood clinic, I was 21. I was on birth control pills, but I hadn’t had my period in two months, and home pregnancy tests were coming up negative, and I needed to know what was going on.
I had just moved to New York City and was just barely surviving on credit cards and my internship salary.
When I found out I was pregnant, I knew right away that I would be getting an abortion. It was a decision I made before I even started having sex; I did not want children. I practiced safe sex, always, but I got pregnant anyway.
That was the first time Planned Parenthood saved me.
Most recently, I needed to get a new IUD, and Planned Parenthood was the only place that would remove my existing IUD and put in a new one all in one procedure and without charging insane rates.
I go to Planned Parenthood by default now, not because I can’t afford other options, but because Planned Parenthood has consistently taken care of my needs as a woman with respect and lack of judgment.
