Story No. 32: Provider from Texas

“Kelsey” was a preschool teacher, newly married and the child of two physicians. She and her husband were delighted when they discovered that she was pregnant with their first child. At their 21 week ultrasound, they discovered that their unborn child had deformities that would cause death either in utero or shortly after birth. As one of the only providers of abortions in our small town, we had to race against the clock to perform her abortion after the state mandated 24-hour waiting period and before the 22 week mark when the procedure would become illegal. If she had had her ultrasound just a day later, she would have had to carry her child until its death in utero, a fate that she felt would have been emotionally crippling for her and her husband and cruel beyond belief for her unborn child.
