Story No. 414: Dr. Lauren from Washington

I cared for a patient, already a mother, who had complex medical and life issues that made accessing care difficult for her. She had a difficult time reaching appointments, but a family member helped her get to her abortion visits and procedure just under our institution’s time cutoff for providing abortion care.

Because of her insurance coverage, she got a type of long-acting, reversible birth control that she wanted. This method would have been far too expensive for her had she needed to pay for it without insurance assistance, even though it was the best method for her. She won’t have to remember to take it every day, every month, or even every year.

This patient had to work hard together with her family to access her abortion care; I’m grateful that her insurance made it possible (and easy) for her to access her contraceptive care.
