To honor the selection of the 500th Voices of Courage story, Physicians for Reproductive Health held a story competition for stories that inspire, break down stigma, and illustrate the importance reproductive health care as part of our everyday lives. The winner, Dr. Danielle from South Carolina, had her story brought to life by artist Magnolia Porter. Thank you Dr. Danielle!
As a first year medical student, I knew that I was not yet ready to be a mom. I asked my doctor for an IUD for birth control, but was told that because I didn’t have children yet I was not a candidate for one.
Thanks to Planned Parenthood, I was able to get the care that I needed and was able to choose the birth control method that worked for me. I had an IUD placed and I was able to complete my education.
Now, I am an OB/GYN and I understand personally and professionally how important it is for all women to have access to all methods of contraception and reproductive health care.
