“Jane” is a young woman with a chronic medical condition. She is in a long-term relationship with her boyfriend and is using birth control pills for pregnancy prevention.
Unfortunately, Jane developed a flare of her medical condition that lead to frequent nausea and vomiting. This made it difficult for her to use her birth control effectively for pregnancy prevention. She was too sick to see her doctor to change her birth control. She was sick enough to need to be admitted to the hospital.
After she was better enough to go home from the hospital, the vomiting returned. She soon found out that she was pregnant, even though multiple pregnancy tests in the hospital had been negative. She knew she was too sick to care for a baby, let alone be pregnant.
She talked it through with her boyfriend and her family, and she decided an abortion would help her focus on her health and prevent a complicated pregnancy. Thankfully, she was able to make an appointment within a week to see an abortion provider. Although it was a frightening few weeks, she is grateful that she was able to access the medical services she needed when she needed it.
