When I was sixteen, I decided to start having sex with my partner at the time. In spite of having an open and positive relationship with my parents, they were ashamed to have me go to my primary care provider for birth control counseling. My mom encouraged me to go to Planned Parenthood, instead. It’s some of the best advice I’ve ever received.
Now ten years later, I think back to what a gift it was to be able to show up at the clinic, scared and unaware, and be welcomed warmly and with compassion. That day, all of my birth control options were clearly explained to me, I chose the option that made the most sense for my life and my health, and that choice was supported. I was able to leave the clinic that day with a year’s supply of birth control pills, at no cost.
These same clinicians were the ones who later helped me realize that my relationship was no longer a healthy relationship, and I needed to get out of it in order to stay safe.
Protect other young women, like me, who thanks to Planned Parenthood, are not only able receive health care services, but receive support and encouragement.
