Story No. 74: Nurse Midwife Sarah from Oregon

I am a woman, mother, wife, and nurse midwife. I went to Planned Parenthood for contraception when I was 16 years old and received nonjudgmental, compassionate care. Planned Parenthood was my source for contraception throughout high school and college. I would not have been able to plan my childbearing without it. I became a nurse midwife in part to “pay it forward” to others. I worked at Planned Parenthood for two years and am proud to have dedicated my time and energy to this fabulous resource. I met and cared for hundreds of women and men who deserved and received evidence-based comprehensive reproductive health care.

I performed cancer screenings and helped control STI outbreaks. I prescribed contraception and educated people on how to use it effectively. I counseled people regarding intimate partner violence and advocated for people with limited support. Many of my colleagues have dedicated much more of their lives to this great organization. Providers at Planned Parenthood help prevent many, many abortions. This is the heart of what comprehensive family planning and reproductive health care does: prevent abortion and support people to control their own destinies. We need more of this, not less.
