I had excruciating cramps every month with my period, causing me to miss work (working full time to save money for graduate school) or school (I got my master of science in speech-language pathology); each month the cramps were worse. Through the Medicaid expansion of the Affordable Care Act, I was able to get an IUD at no cost. Since the IUD, my cramps have disappeared. Without it, I would have continued to miss more and more work with increasing pain that even massive doses of painkillers could not ease. I would likely have lost my job and been unable to work.
