Story No. 97: Dr. Linda from New Mexico

When I work in Las Cruces, New Mexico, I take care of women who have driven for hours and hours to get to me. These women are not in any way getting a casual abortion that is covered under their medical care. This explains the statistics from the Guttmacher Institute that show abortion rates in New York State were nearly fifteen times those in Alabama in 2014. Why? This is likely due in part to the fact that abortion in New York state is covered by insurance including Medicaid, widely available, inexpensive, etc. If women in Alabama had this access, there would be many, many more abortions in Alabama. And 14 or 19 year old women, like those who came into my office, would not be having babies in Alabama. Yet, they are. We had a student rotating with us from Alabama. She told us that most of the young women in her residency clinic have 2-3 babies by the time they are 21 and then they get their tubes tied. Talk about health care disparities!
