Where do you call home?
I am lucky to have found a “home” in many places in the South. I was born, raised, and educated in Texas (my original home, Gig ’em Aggies). The city of New Orleans and its wonderful people made me an Ob/Gyn and will always be my second home. Currently, home is Western North Carolina.
What are your clinical or research interests?
Cardiovascular health/disease in pregnant patients, critical care for the obstetric patient, environmental endocrine disruptors and their impact on pregnancy outcomes, and family planning/abortion access for high-risk pregnant patients.
What do you wish other providers knew about reproductive health, rights, and justice?
I wish more people were aware of the direct correlation between gender equity (whether that is education, equal pay, healthcare access, research funding, or reproductive rights) and the economy. Reproductive health equity is not a one-off issue that only advocates and healthcare providers should care about. It is an issue that affects and is affected by all other social and economic policies.
What local justice-centered organization do you want to uplift?
Carolina Reproductive Action Network
What is bringing you joy?
The end-of-season surge of tomatoes and peppers in our vegetable garden, sweater season, and (as always) our two cats.
Our Meet Our Advocates series showcases the talents and passion of one of our doctors and finds out, in their own words, what inspires them to be physician advocates. Bhaskari Burra (MD) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2025 and specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
