Meet Our Advocates: Danielle Gershon (she/her)

Where do you call home?

Birmingham, AL

What are your clinical or research interests?

Reincorporating abortion care into the purview of generalists and expanding the share of women’s health care provided by midwives.

What do you wish other providers knew about reproductive health, rights, and justice?

Always center the pregnant person. People get caught up in worrying about things that aren’t about the patient, like other people or their own feelings. If we remember to center the patient, we will position ourselves to get it right.

What local justice-centered organization do you want to uplift?

Birth Sanctuary Gainesville. I admire the work Dr. Stephanie Mitchell is doing. Opening a birth center in a maternal care desert in a state hostile toward efforts to increase access to healthcare requires courage, patience, perseverance and determination. She is a model for people trying to expand access of all kinds.

What is bringing you joy?

Being closer to my family in GA who have been enjoying Sunday dinners without me for far too long. Sending emails to my Senators: Tommy Tuberville and Katie Britt – two people who I almost exclusively disagree with. They probably don’t care and maybe they don’t even notice but it makes me feel good to know they might perhaps realize that everyone they represent didn’t and will never vote for them.

Our Meet Our Advocates series showcases the talents and passion of one of our doctors and finds out, in their own words, what inspires them to be physician advocates. Danielle Gershon (MD) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2025 and specializes in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
