Meet Our Advocates: Josephine Urbina (she/her/ella)

Where do you call home?

East Los Angeles, CA. No matter where my journey to being a Complex Family Planning specialist has taken me, East LA is my home. Only in East LA can you find a taco truck or taquero set up on every corner in the neighborhood as soon as the sun sets.

What are your clinical or research interests?

Immigrant health, abortion care in Latinx communities, Gender-inclusive care, language and culturally concordant care, health equity, abortion med-ed.

What do you wish other providers knew about reproductive health, rights, and justice?

Latinx DO have abortions. In fact, they represent 30% of all abortions patients in the US while our Black counterparts represent 29%. Together, BIPOC make up a majority of abortion patients in the US. So it’s very easy to see how abortion bans directly harm marginalized communities like Black, Brown, immigrant and LGTBQ+ folx.

What local justice-centered organization do you want to uplift?

Birth Companions Community Center in San Francisco is doing groundbreaking work in creating a healing and culturally concordant birth experience for Latinx immigrants.

What is bringing you joy?

Being a foodie & tequila lover, travel hacking on points, spending time with my husband and family, catching up on chisme with my sisters, cousins and friends while brunching.

Our Meet Our Advocates series showcases the talents and passion of one of our doctors and finds out, in their own words, what inspires them to be physician advocates. Josephine Urbina (MD, MAS) is a Fellow in our Leadership Training Academy Class of 2025 and specializes in Complex Family Planning.
