Where are you from?
I was born in California but grew up in Long Island, New York.
What’s your specialty or area of expertise?
I am a family physician. I am currently in a reproductive health research fellowship, where I am obtaining skills to become a clinical researcher, being trained in family planning, and in school obtaining a MPH in Health Policy.
What first inspired you to become a doctor?
My family inspired me, especially my mom. Growing up, my little sister had frequent asthma attacks and was hospitalized a couple of times. When I was seven years old, my mom taught me how to prepare my sister’s nebulizer machine so that my sister would able to receive medication while my mom was at work. This was the first time that I had responsibilities as a caretaker and realized the importance of medicine. This also instilled a nurturing quality in me. When I reached junior high school, I learned about various career options at Career Day. Doctor was the only one that stood out to me. Around the same time, I also found out about an amazing Bachelor’s of Science and Medical (BS/MD) combined program. I knew that was where I was going for college. I made sure that I was the ideal candidate and got in. This program has shaped me into the doctor that I am today. I do not think I would have had the great mentors and support group anywhere else.
What story about one of your patients most sticks with you?
Being a family physician, I have the opportunity to see entire families. I remember the first family that I had the privilege to take care of during my residency. Andrea (not her real name) came in for a pregnancy confirmation. This was an unexpected pregnancy, but welcomed. She continued to see me for her prenatal care, and I got to deliver her beautiful daughter. I placed her IUD at her postpartum visit and saw her daughter for well child visits. Getting to know families is one of the best things about my job.
What current policy issue especially motivates you to be an advocate?
Health care access is the policy issue that motivates me. Health care is a right and not a privilege. It is upsetting that I have patients who have to decide between paying bills and their health care. I want everyone to have access to the health care they need and deserve.
Who is your social justice hero?
I do not have a particular social justice hero. However, Guttmacher Institute is one of favorite organizations. Their research has helped to create policies to advance reproductive health care and rights, in the United States and globally.
