Contraceptive equity mandates that the entire spectrum of contraceptive care is accessible to all without barriers, pressure, or coercion.
Although we have had recent wins in expanding access to contraception, including Opill becoming available over the counter and the Biden Administration reaffirming birth control coverage without cost under the ACA, there is still a lot more work needed to be done in order to obtain contraceptive equity.
This commentary, co-authored by PRH’s Reproductive Justice Fellow Mackenzie Darling, discusses the current state of birth control in 2024 and highlights six ongoing, crucial factors impacting people’s ability to access contraceptive care. It also recommends steps that need to be taken to help ensure contraceptive care access for all.
